SAMPLE PRESENTATION BEFORE DRC OR CITY COUNCIL
Good morning, my name is Kelly Flett and I live at 15355 Tennessee Ave NE (name and address required at beginning)
I have lived in the Mangrove Bay neighborhood for 23 years. I choose to live here because it's a peaceful, quite neighborhood with safe streets that have very little traffic. The cars on our roads are mostly residents who drive slowly. My husband and I enjoy walking our dog and riding bikes on these streets. Neighbors on both sides of us have small children that ride their bikes down the road or play catch in the yard near the street. How horrible would it be for one of these little children to be injured or killed because someone was rushing through our neighborhood to make it to their yoga class on time at the YMCA.
I am not opposed to a new middle school or a YMCA, but I don't want to have this project built at the cost of our quality of life. With the current submitted design, cars will be flooding into our neighborhood to drop off and pick up children at the school. If that isn't bad enough, this plan suggests the entrance to a commercial building, the YMCA, also be placed off Pershing street - a street running right through our neighborhood. We won't have a day of peace, because this facility is open every day.
To think a few signs will keep people from turning into our neighborhood is ridiculous. The traffic is frequently so heavy on 62nd Avenue NE during the morning and afternoon rush, you can't even make at right turn. How is that supposed to be a good place to put an entrance for a large school and commercial property? Is there going to be a traffic light installed?
Please do not approve this vacation of Davenport until a thorough, on-site traffic study has been completed. This study should taking a good look at the parents parking on streets near Shore Acres Elementary just down the road. The study should also carefully consider the impact to the neighborhood in terms of safety, convenience, quality of life and property values.
Thank you.
